Important regulatory changes are affecting the use of AI in the Italian legal sector.
The Italian Senate recently approved a bill on AI, in line with the European AI Act. The AI bill focuses on transparency, human oversight, and accountability — with a focus on intellectual professions and judicial activity.
For legal professionals:
- AI must support, not replace, human skills
- Customers must be informed when AI tools are used
- The responsibility always remains with the professional
In the judicial context:
- AI is classified as “high risk” and cannot replace the judge's reasoning
- Decisions must always be motivated by a person
- Clear criteria for responsibility and supervision are defined
Italian law firms are integrating AI for document analysis, legal research, and automation, while investing in training to ensure its ethical and effective use.
A strong signal towards responsible innovation, which strengthens — and does not replace — the centrality of the human being in law.
